Figures are the official charges every council in England set for April 2026 to March 2027.
How is council tax worked out?
Your council sets a charge for each band, A to H, every April. Your home’s band depends on what it was worth on 1 April 1991. The charge includes the council’s own share plus police, fire and, in some areas, the county council or a mayor. Across England, the average Band D bill for 2026/27 is £2,392.
How much is council tax a month?
Most councils split the year’s bill into 10 monthly payments, usually April to January, so two months a year have none. You have the right to ask for 12 instalments instead, which makes each payment smaller.
How much do I save if I live alone?
A single adult gets 25% off. Some people don’t count as adults for council tax, such as full-time students and apprentices, so you can still get the discount if you live with them. A home where everyone is a full-time student pays nothing.
Do I pay council tax if I rent?
Usually. If you rent a whole home, the people living there pay, unless the tenancy says council tax is included. In a shared house where each person has their own agreement for a room, the landlord pays and usually builds it into the rent.
Why is my bill different from the calculator?
The calculator uses the council’s average, including the average parish charge. Parishes set their own small charges, so one village can pay a little more or less. Discounts, exemptions and Council Tax Reduction for people on a low income also change the bill.
